IJ Start Canon Pixma TR4522– The Canon PIXMA TR4522 Inkjet All-in-one delivers exceptional performance. It is packed with useful features, including support for the Amazon Alexa Voice, making it a solid addition to low-volume home offices.
As one would expect at an all-in-one price, it is somewhat slow and expensive to use, but it has a strong feature set and prints exceptionally well, especially the photos. Plus, like some of the other printers we’ve seen lately, it includes support for Amazon’s Alexa, which allows for non-loud printing.
It is a strong contender for home Office users who need inexpensive AIO for easy printing, copying, and scanning.
Room on the table
Entry-level home printers like TR4522 spend most of the time sitting idle as long as you call them to churn out random pictures, a few pages of the document, a copy or two – you get an idea. Therefore, Canon and its competitors design them to occupy as little desk or countertop real estate as possible.
To this end, TR4522 measures 7.5 to 17.7 to 11.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 13 pounds according to its low cost of the competition.
Canon does not publish the monthly duty cycle and has recommended a monthly print volume specification for its consumer-grade inkjet printer. Given its print speed rating (which I’ll cover below), low capacity paper, and the high cost of working (also on), you shouldn’t rely on this AIO for more than a couple of hundred pages each month; While this can definitely be churn now, and then you need to.
The basic connection consists of USB 2.0 and Wi-Fi, and Android, Fire OS, iOS, and Windows 10 Mobile drivers are available. Walks tasks, configuration, and navigation are handled from a very basic control panel, as shown below.
PIXMA software and features Smart Home
In addition to the standard IO drivers driver, TR4522 ‘s Software Bundle consists of the following usability and performance software: Scanning utility for Windows and MAC platforms, Scan Utility Lite for Mac, Easy-Phoneprint editor, Setup wizard, my printer, and quick menu to easily access printer’s programs and settings.
You can also print, scan, and manipulate images from an Android or iOS device using the Canon and light-PhotoPrint printing software. Finally, the Canon message in Print lets you embed hidden messages — text, animations, music, video links, and other creative enhancements — directly within the image.
You can then use the mobile device’s camera to view the inline message in the printed image.
Canon has also started to include Smart Home functionality through built-in support for Amazon Alexa and for, Google Assistant, and other automation services via IFTTT (if that’s what) technology.
HP and Epson, too, recently came on board with the IFTTT Voice activation-HP with its tango X and Epson with all its machines that support the company’s Epson Connect service.
With the IFTTT activation voice, you can say that your machine is printable through the app on your smartphone, either via Smart Echo speaker or other listening devices IFTTT. So far, I have seen the IFTTT technology embedded in three Pixmas, TS9520, TS9521C, and TR4522.
Not built for Speed
Canon rates TR4522 at 8.8 pages per minute (ppm) for monochrome pages and 5ppm for color pages, which besides HP 3830 (8.5 PPM), low-speed print ratings I know. I tested TR4522 via USB with our standard Intel Core i5 equipped PC stand running Windows 10 Professional.
Next, I typed a set of very complex colors of Acrobat, Excel, and PowerPoint business documents, consisting mainly of inline graphics and embedded photos, and then combined those results with those from printing a 12-page text document in the Previous test to come up with a 4.5 PPM score to print our entire suite.
This figure lags behind TR7520, negligible 0.2 ppm, and 0.1 PPM faster than brother LDSP-J497DW, 1.9 PPM ahead of OfficeJet 3830, and 2.9 PPM is slower than WF-2860.
Finally, TR4522 printed our 4-on-6-inch picture on an average of 58 seconds, which was around mid-road (and tied with G4520) for this entry-level AIOs group.
The solution is to wait.
While the printer line TR Canon is not part of the TS consumer company-Class photo-printer series, TR4522 proves again that the Canon is hard to beat when it comes to visualization.
TR4522 Print colorful and vivid photos and supports borderless printing in the media, ranging from 4 by 6 inches to 8.5 by 11 inches. You can also design and print polished and professional postcards without fields and brochures.
The photo output is not the only thing this little AYO does well, though. The text in our test documents turned out to be profiled and very picky, even at smaller sizes up to about 6 points.
Our business graphics looked amazing, too, with evenly flowing gradients, smooth fills, and crisp, well-delineated hairs (strokes less than one dot thick). As always, I have no complaints at the exit of this PIXMA.
High costs of running
Of course, most entry-level models cost a lot to use, but at 8.7 cents for monochrome pages and 18.7 cents per page color, TR4522 is one of the most expensive I’ve seen.
Brother Chipboard-J497DW’s running costs, for example, are 2.7 cents less than a monochrome page and 2.2 cents lower for color prints, and Epson WF-2860 is at 3.2 cents less for black prints and 2.4 cents cheaper for the color, a little better.
For real relief, when you sign up for the HP software instantly, the OfficeJet 3830 can deliver both black and color pages, even pictures, for as low as 3.5 each.
Home-Satellite printing
Canon PIXMA TR4522 is a low-volume printer, period. Nothing makes it clearer than his Sky-high costs, small paper-the-input tray, and slow print speeds. What it has for it, however, is the exceptional print quality, voice automation, the ability to edit photos from your mobile device, and automatic duplex printing that isn’t set in this value range.
If you print less than a couple of hundred pages monthly, the high costs should be that great deals.
If you do not need excellent photo quality or automatic duplex you get with TR4522, and want to save a bit on consumables, brother CHIPBOARD-J497DW and Epson WF-2860 are as good alternatives that will not beat your wallet as hard in the Long Run. Otherwise, TR4522 is a large small printer for easy operation at home.
