Available for less than £ 50, the Canon Pixma MX395 comes with facilities not only for printing, scanning and copying but also adds a 33.6 kbps fax machine. Essentially, the latter is reinforced by an automatic document feeder 30 sheets, allowing you to feed in packs of documents at once.

What you do not get with it, however, they are small trinkets associated with model homes. So there is no memory card unit and a port for USB sticks, for example. You can use the software interface (more on this later) to scan cloud services (such as Evernote and Dropbox), but it is not as easy as some models for input and output images.

Probably most important, the Canon Pixma MX395 does not have wireless facilities – or, for that matter, any network support such as ethernet confidence – so you’re stuck with a USB connection.

For home office users this can be a nuisance; many users will have to pay an extra £ 14 and get the MX455. This adds support for USB and Wi-Fi memories (but still no ethernet).
