CanoScan 8800F Driver Download– With all the excitement over new cameras and printers at Canon’s latest product launch (web ID: 123010), the CanoScan 8800F is almost forgotten. But it sits at the very top of Canon’s line of consumer scanners and, like the EOS 40D and Pixma ip4500, offers shoppers plenty to think about.
The specs are like a wish list for anyone who wants a scanner for permanent image archiving: a maximum resolution of 4,800 x 9,600 means high-quality images weigh 46 megapixels; the maximum color depth the 8800F will produce is 48-bit, and Canon claims it can scan a color A4 source in seven seconds.
Canon’s claim of speed turns out to be quite accurate. The white LEDs reached peak brightness almost instantly compared to traditional cold cathode lamps, and we had a preview image in under 10 seconds. With the lights already warmed up, the time drops slightly to eight seconds.
We struggled to reach Canon’s claim of seven seconds for A4 photos, but nine seconds at 300dpi is far from sluggish. Even a 600dpi 10 x 8in print appears in just 20 seconds. Text pages also appear quickly – at 150dpi, you are only limited by the mechanical speed of the scan unit, and our pages were ready to go in just eight seconds.
Image quality is as good as we’d expect from a device the manufacturer claims is top-notch. Colors are reproduced well, and scans are generally good enough to work with without further tinkering in editing programs. However, this is not the last word on quality, as the Epson Perfection V350 excels for pristine quality when scans are viewed side by side. Epson’s colors are richer and more accurate – lush purples look exactly like that – while the 8800F relies on adjusting curves and levels to get colors closer to the source. It’s not devastating, but archivists looking for absolute color accuracy should keep this slight drawback in mind.
Fortunately, the 8800F has some other safety boons. This is a very competent film scanner, for example. Included in the box are a trio of plastic adapters: one for a 35mm film strip, one for 35mm slide mounted, and one for medium format film.
The 35mm film strip adapter will be the most widely used, and Canon has gone beyond the normal one-strip-at-a-time approach from other manufacturers. Open the adapter, and you can insert two strips, usually scanning eight frames.
Scanning this at 2,400dpi (giving a scan equivalent to about eight megapixels), the 8800F failed to live up to its initial impression of a speed demon. We waited less than 20 minutes for our eight frames to be captured, even though the quality of the final slide matched our reflective source. Colors are well reproduced, with a pleasant hint of grain. Once again, the Epson Perfection V350 beats it for quality, managing darker and richer colors, and making Canon images look too bright in comparison.
The best inclusion is Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 – our A-Listed photo editor so far this month. It’s a powerful, full-featured app, and its inclusion here is a clear bonus. Surprisingly, you also get ArcSoft photo Studio 5 – which isn’t a bad choice for image editing but is a plus for this company’s requirements.
Everything is kept simple, although there are many options for software image enhancement, including dust and hair removal. However, this proved less effective than simply touching the image with the clone tool. ScanSoft OmniPage 4 SE (web ID: 126873) performs OCR tasks proficiently and accurately for most jobs. But, annoyingly, a nag box tells you to buy the full version whenever you try to perform a more complex task.
While there are a few downsides, and the image quality is great over good image quality, the 8800F’s incredible versatility makes it great value for money. The transparency scanner is incredibly versatile, has a fast scan engine, and is an excellent software bundle.
